St. Gregory Cathedral School is pleased to announce a new Spanish immersion program for full day Pre-Kindergarten students.
The pilot program, which we are calling Spanish-Garden, is original to St. Gregory and will kick start the
learning of a foreign language. On Monday, Wednesday and Friday, the class is held as usual in the English language. On Tuesday and Thursday the class is completely immersed in the Spanish language. With 40% of the weekly learning in Spanish, PreK students will become highly proficient in this second language by the end of the school year.
Research suggests that when children are adequately exposed to two languages at an early age, they are more flexible and creative. Students who are bilingual may also reach high levels of cognitive development before their peers. Numerous studies also suggest that studying a second language in elementary school can boost student achievement in other academic areas and achieve higher standardized test scores.
St. Gregory’s Spanish-Garden teacher and classroom aide are completely bilingual and have much experience working with early childhood children.
